
This earthquake, which struck the town of Shigatse in Tibet around 9 am, once again highlights the seismic vulnerability of the Himalayan region. This earthquake of 7.1 magnitude has not only destroyed buildings and infrastructure but has also shaken the lives and responsibilities of the people there. Shigatse, which is a sacred town and the traditional home of the Panchen Lama, is now witnessing a different form of disaster.
According to Chinese media reports, 95 people have so far died and more than 130 are injured. Temperatures in Tingri county, near the earthquake’s epicenter, are around -8°C and are expected to drop to -18°C at night. Rescue operations become even more challenging. Electricity and water supplies have also completely disappeared, creating further problems for the affected people.
