According to scientists, cracks have appeared in the Indian tectonic plate earlier also due to different thickness and structure. Evidence of cracks has been found in a major area near Bhutan. From here, mantle rocks are filling the empty space. By mapping the earthquake waves, scientists have identified different zones below the surface which point towards the separation of the plate.
Helium Isotopes Gave Strong Signals
From helium isotope samples from Tibetan springs and data from earthquake waves, scientists discovered that when plates separate, hot rocks in the mantle move toward the surface. “Humans never knew continents could behave like this,” says Douwe van Hinsbergen, a geodynamicist at Utrecht University.
