
South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was finally detained from his Hannam dong residence, Seoul on Wednesday, 15 January 2025. The detention came after a dramatic and emotional standoff in which law enforcement agencies exerted their full power.
Martial Law decision and political storm
On 3 December 2024, President Yoon surprised the entire country by imposing martial law. He described his decision as an important step against the “anti-state opposition” which was using legislative majority to stop his governance. But his move became a burden for his position.
Opposition parties and civil society groups called the martial law a “conspiracy against democracy” that could be an attempt at a rebellion. The Anti-Corruption Investigation Office is now investigating the reasons and consequences behind the decision.
