Gorakhpur: Emerging as a Hub for Green Energy and Ethanol Production

Gorakhpur, a prominent city in Uttar Pradesh, is rapidly establishing itself as a key center for green energy, particularly in ethanol production. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the state government’s investment promotion policies, Gorakhpur is on its way to becoming an ethanol production hub. Let’s explore how this city is revolutionizing the biofuel sector and the initiatives driving this transformation.

Gorakhpur’s Largest Private Sector Ethanol Plant

Located in Sector 26 of the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA), the largest private-sector ethanol plant, established by Messrs Kayan Distillery Private Limited, has been completed at a cost of ₹1200 crore. The foundation stone for this plant was laid by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on August 12, 2023, and its inauguration is scheduled for April 6, 2025, also by the CM. This plant produces grain-based ethanol (using rice and maize), with an initial capacity of 3 lakh liters per day in its first phase. After expansion across three phases, its production capacity will reach 10 lakh liters per day.

According to Vinay Singh, Managing Director of Kayan Distillery, the plant has already begun supplying ethanol under an MoU with Indian Oil. Additionally, this project has created employment opportunities for 4,000 people, both directly and indirectly, marking a significant boost to Gorakhpur’s economic growth.

Ethanol Production at Pipraich Sugar Mill

On the state government’s initiative, the Pipraich Sugar Mill is set to begin ethanol production. A budget allocation of ₹90 crore has been made for this project in the financial year 2025-26. The plant, with a capacity of 60,000 liters per day, will produce ethanol directly from sugarcane juice. This initiative will not only promote green energy but also ensure timely payments to sugarcane farmers.

Biofuel Complex in Dhuriyapar

In Dhuriyapar, Gorakhpur, Indian Oil’s Biofuel Complex project is taking shape. The first phase, a Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plant costing ₹165 crore, has already been inaugurated. The second phase will focus on ethanol production, further strengthening Gorakhpur’s position in biofuel manufacturing.

Why Gorakhpur is Becoming an Ethanol Hub?

  • Government Policies: Both the Yogi government and the Modi-led central government are prioritizing biofuels. Ethanol is seen as an eco-friendly and cost-effective fuel alternative.
  • Three Major Plants: With ethanol production starting at three locations (GIDA, Pipraich, and Dhuriyapar), Gorakhpur is emerging as the ethanol hub of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
  • Economic Benefits: These projects are generating jobs and boosting the local economy.
  • Support for Farmers: Ethanol production from sugarcane and grains will increase farmers’ income.

Uttar Pradesh: India’s Top Ethanol-Producing State

Thanks to the Yogi government’s policies, Uttar Pradesh has already become the leading ethanol-producing state in India. The projects in Gorakhpur will further solidify this position. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision is to develop Gorakhpur as a new center for green energy, and this dream is now turning into reality.

Conclusion

Gorakhpur’s rise in the green energy sector is a step toward environmental conservation, economic development, and job creation. In the coming years, Gorakhpur has the potential to become a model for ethanol production, not just for Uttar Pradesh but for the entire country. If you’re interested in the future of green energy and biofuels, Gorakhpur’s progress is an inspiring story to follow.
