History of China-Taiwan

History of China-Taiwan

Taiwan and China are separated by the Taiwan Strait, which joins the South China Sea and the East China Sea. The Republic of China (ROC) was established in 1912 after the fall of the Manchu-led Qing dynasty. But in 1949, Mao Zedong of the Communist Party established a new government in Taiwan. China’s nationalist government was removed through revolution. Chiang Kai-shek, who was the President of ROC, moved to Taiwan and formed his own government there.

UN and Taiwan

Taiwan, which was then ROC, was first recognized as a legitimate government within the United Nations and was also given a permanent seat in the Security Council. After 1971 this seat was given to the People’s Republic of China, after which Taiwan’s international identity became weak.

Way forward

Beijing’s military drills and the threat to Taiwan’s democracy, both are a big threat to the Asia-Pacific region. If this tension continues to grow, it can turn into a major conflict not just between China and Taiwan, but between the major powers of the world. Taiwan has become a major issue between Washington and Beijing, and this is the time when the global community will have to take a step in the direction of democracy and peace.
