Rakesh Sharma and Soyuz T-11: A Historic Mission

On April 3, 1984, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma took his first flight towards space by sitting in the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft. This mission was a joint space mission of India and Russia (then Soviet Union). During this mission, Rakesh Sharma remained in space for 7 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes.
The most famous moment came when the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi asked him live from space – “How does India look when seen from space?”
And his answer was – “Our Hindustan is better than the whole world!”
This mission was not only a success, but also laid the foundation of India’s space exploration.

Why did ISRO order this capsule?

You must be wondering where did this capsule go from Nehru Planetarium 4 years ago?

When ISRO launched its Chandrayaan Mission, this capsule was requisitioned to study the structure and technical aspects of space travel. ISRO scientists examined it closely and now when their work is complete, it has been sent back to Nehru Planetarium.

Why did Russia give this capsule to India?

Russia gifted the Soyuz T-11 capsule to India’s then PM Indira Gandhi so that it could become a symbol of India’s space achievements. Earlier it was displayed in a section of Nehru Planetarium, but now it will be displayed in a more engaging way in the new modern gallery.
