India and America’s relations after Joe Biden’s decision

India and America’s relations are entering a new phase after Joe Biden’s decision. Biden has lifted restrictions on India’s three nuclear institutions just before his presidency ends, which is being considered a big step for US-India civil nuclear cooperation. But there could be many strategic objectives behind this.

  1. Pressure on Russia and India’s role:
The US has imposed sanctions on Russia’s oil exports, while India is a major oil buyer of Russia. In such a situation, Biden’s step could be an attempt to indirectly distance India from Russia. In the context of the Ukraine war, the US wants India to stand against Russia.
  2. Strategic partnership in Indo-Pacific:
The US considers India an important partner in the Quad alliance. The US needs strong ties with India to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region. This move seems to be a step in that direction.
  3. Cooperation in technology and energy sector:
This decision has been taken to further strengthen the civil nuclear deal between India and the US. This will increase collaboration between the two countries in the areas of advanced technology and energy.

It is difficult to say whether this is just a strategy to build pressure or a proposal for genuine partnership. But it is clear that the US wants to build closer relations with India while securing its geopolitical interests.

India will have to take advantage of this decision and focus on its long-term strategy so that this partnership is mutually beneficial.
