There is a serious political crisis going on in South Korea right now. There are accusations of trying to impose martial law on impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, which failed in December 2024. Investigators tried to arrest him on January 3, 2025, but his security forces and supporters supported him and prevented the arrest. Now this crisis has become more complicated.
Current Situation
Investigators have an arrest warrant which is valid till January 6, 2025. But President Yoon has not appeared for questioning three times, and has ignored the terms of the existing warrant. If investigators are unable to arrest him by this deadline, he will have to go to court for a new and stronger warrant. Experts say the court may approve a stronger warrant, which includes a longer detention period.
Amid this entire crisis, Acting President Choi Sang-mok has taken presidential duties. This happened when Prime Minister Han Duck-soo also had to face impeachment. There is still a lot of pressure on South Korea’s political and governance systems.
